Chateaubriand Memorial Service

from Anglo-French Urban & Ambient 2 by Tony Stowers

/

about

Just outside the town of Chateaubriand in the direction of lower Normandy is a quarry where 27 of 50 Communist hostages in total in other places in France were shot on 22/10/1941 as a reprisal for the earlier assassination of a German Colonel in Nantes in the summer. Today is the 81st anniversary of the event. The quarry has now been made into a large memorial dedicated to the memories of the victims. Pots of earth gathered from sites across Europe where other massacres occurred are loaded into the wall below the statue; At the start you can hear the names of the students and their colleges being called to present new samples. The names of the 27 victims are read out alternately by a man and a woman and then a full list of dignitaries including Phillipe Martinez, the leader of the CGT, France's biggest union. The last post is sounded as well as the national anthem. It was a windy day.
