These 8 audio recordings were made on my Lenovo tablet in August and September 2022. In August I was on holiday for the first two weeks on what the French call an 'almost-island' - an island connected to the mainland by a road peninsula. Gavres is on the southern half of the major port of Lorient in southern Brittany and is only about 2km x 1km wide. This was also the period of the legendary heatwave of 2022 with daily temperatures hitting 40C; Three of the recordings are from Gavres and the nearest bigger town Port Louis which is only a hundred metres from Gavres across a swiftly-running tidal channel. The other two recordings were made in mid-September 2022 when I was stationed on Platform 4 of Darlington Bank Top Station selling copies of my book 'No. 1'. I spent three and a half days in total at the station and had an intriguing time chatting to complete strangers/passengers about the subject of the book the Stockton to Darlington Railway of 1825. All these tracks have been edited - that is to say shortened rather than left in real-time.
